One of the most common questions we hear when discussing shock tuning is: What are bypass tubes, and why should I upgrade them?
It’s a great question—and understanding the answer can make a huge difference in how your suspension performs.
What Are Internal Bypass Tubes?
Internal bypass tubes are used in Fox internal bypass shocks, including Fox Dynamics Smart Shocks found on Can-Am vehicles and a few other models. These shocks feature an internal sleeve with precision ports that allow oil to bypass the piston during certain parts of the shock’s travel.
This oil bypassing is what gives internal bypass shocks their ability to feel smooth and compliant in some situations while remaining firm and controlled in others.
Why Upgrade to a Modified Bypass Tube?
Upgrading your bypass tube comes down to control and customization. A modified bypass tube allows us to change the port layout inside the shock, which dramatically expands how the suspension can be tuned.
As the piston approaches the bump zone, we can stage the ports differently to:
Increase or decrease the size of the bump zone
Adjust how aggressively the shock ramps up into that zone
The result?
You get more comfort in slow-speed, chattery terrain, while still maintaining a stiffer, more controlled bottom-out when things get aggressive.
More Tuning Range, Better Performance
Compared to stock bypass tubes, a modified bypass tube gives you far greater tuning range. You’re no longer limited to the factory configuration—you can dial in the shock specifically for your driving style and terrain.
This upgrade is also a major step up from a non-bypass shock tune. The added control allows for better performance across a wide range of conditions, from trail riding to high-speed desert or dune use.
Who Benefits Most from Bypass Tube Upgrades?
We commonly see racers choose the bypass tube upgrade for platforms like the Maverick R, and anyone dune riding with a Pro R typically wants this upgrade as well. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive—we’ve seen excellent results, and customers are consistently happy with the improvement.
Final Thoughts
Bypass tube upgrades are absolutely worth considering. They offer improved comfort, better bottom-out control, and far more tuning flexibility than stock options.
